Ever since I was young I have felt the need to create pictures. I won my first art completion at the age of ten; the winning effort was a painted scene of a London skyline for a Christmas card. When I was a teenager, I loved to draw portraits of my family and friends and I also drew pictures of football heroes like Gary Lineker and Diego Maradona. However, it was only when I went to Art College in 1990 that I began to really develop my artistic identity. I discovered colour theory and it gave me the ability to create realistic images. I travelled around London and painted scenes such as the River Thames and Kew Gardens. In 1998 I discovered a way to 'divorce' my visual intuition for realism so I could work more with memory and emotion. This 'figurative' approach resulted in an exhibition for me in Germany and a few years later I adapted the style to create large religious art on canvas and on my Mac computer.
In 2004 I visited Trinidad for the first time and really enjoyed the experience - never mind that there was a beer strike at the time! I managed to paint several pictures (see 'Purple House', 'Mayaro' and 'Natasha').
I returned to the island in 2007 for carnival and I became a human canvas when I took part in J'ouvert! I made some more paintings, mostly at night time (see 'Chaguaramas' and 'Jean Pierre Complex').
All the images displayed here are created using acrylic on paper – my preferred media when working directly from life - and are slightly smaller than A4 in size.
