Judith Navarro Matthews was born in Trinidad where she lived for 31 years before moving to Canada.  She was educated at Holy Name Convent although she never formally studied Art at school having been advised to study Cookery instead! She worked at BWIA as a flight attendant for 11 years before immigrating to Canada.

Judith’s creative side first showed itself when she began sewing and making her own clothes as a teenager.  She still continues to sew up to this day also taking up Patchwork and Quilting along the way.  She loves putting all the colours together.  About 10 years ago she started doing Pottery.  Working on the wheel and hand building, Judith created many bowls, plates, ornaments, masks, etc, painting on them, glazing and also experimenting with Raku.

After the death of a close friend’s husband, Judith, trying to keep her friend busy, enrolled them in their first art class together and found her true passion.  Painting in oils, she tries to bring the senses alive with the feeling of being present in her landscapes of Canada and her native home, Trinidad.

Judith is a member of The Pine Ridge Art Council, The Durham West Arts Centre and The Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago.  She has taken part in many Studio Tours in Canada.  Her paintings have been displayed in Pickering City Hall as well as in private collections in Canada, England, USA, Trinidad and the Caribbean and she is looking forward to her first exhibition in Trinidad in November 2011.
