Dilip Denesh Maharaj

Born in the year 1976, this artist resides in the Royal Borough of Arima. He has a great liking for the aesthetics and is an accomplished singer and photographer. His passion for art developed while at the Corinth Teacher’s College during the years 1999-2001 and he graduated with a Distinction in Art. After graduating, he spent a year at the primary level and in September, 2002 he entered the Secondary level teaching Visual Arts at the Vishnu Boys Hindu College.

Dilip is one of the artists who were a part of the recent Art Expressions tour spearheaded by Arimian artist, Richard Martinez.  In Art Expressions I, Dilip exhibited 7 pieces of work in his home town, Arima, in May, 2009. In October, 2009, Art Expressions II was showcased in San Fernando, where he exhibited 9 pieces of work. Art Expressions III led Dilip to the mecca of the art capital, Port-of-Spain, in January, 2010, where he successfully exhibited 11 pieces of work. Some of his sold pieces are currently in the homes and offices of their proud new owners in New York, Pennsylvania, Canada, Venezuela and Trinidad.

Although he is still experimenting and trying to discover his own style of painting, Dilip paints both impressionistic and expressionistic style. His paintings lean greater towards expressionism however, and he loves working from his mind to produce semi abstract and abstract art which all tell of great and deep messages to the discerning eye.

His palette embodies a melange of vibrant Caribbean and East Indian colours. Dilip is often greatly inspired by his mood based on his observations, reading, conversations, trips and present social issues, be it positive or negative. His final paintings therefore would often exhibit his brushstrokes reflecting his mood and the rhythm of his life at that particular point in time.

A Child’s Innocence 2009
85 x 60cm
acrylic on canvas

Inspired from the story where in Africa, during the period of apartheid, a fence separates a white girl from a black boy. The girl is sucking on a lollipop and passes it through the fence for the boy to suck upon which he then passes back and the girl continues sucking. How amazing and pure is it that only love, friendship and truth is seen then. This contradicts the grown man’s hypocrisy who unfortunately sees with one eye and then judges with the other.
