Eva Kenton

Eva KentonBorn in November 1937 in Silesia, Germany (now part of Poland) Eva experienced the trauma of World War Two in her early childhood. After the Russian invasion, she and her family, having been deported, grew up in West Germany. Eva started painting in oil at the age of 15 and after leaving school decided to study Textile Design (apprenticeship with NINO, Nordhorn) followed by her attendance at Art College (Werkkunstschule, Hannover)

Having a passion for travel she made her first contact with Trinidad during her visit to England in 1958. She played a role in a television production “Calypso, Shango, Limbo” in the Hamburg Studios in 1959 and eventually married and settled in England in 1960. While raising her three children she continued painting, mainly in oils, in Germany and England, exhibiting her work in the Medway Towns (Kent) as well as on Bayswater Road in London.

In the ‘70s she attended Sittingbourne College of Education and later taught Art & Design for 14 years as Department Head at a Secondary School for Boys in Rochester, Kent. The exhibitions of her students’ work were major annual events. She also taught the inventive medium of Batik in adult evening classes. When she retired in 1993 Eva went into supply teaching which enabled her to undertake the more extensive world travel she longed for.

By now photography and filmmaking (“The Avenging Suitor”, “Mali”, “Teshugi’s Tale” etc.) had become a major interest, and the photographic records of her travels through Asia, Africa, South America and the Caribbean have been widely appreciated as demonstrated by the award of trophies and merit certificates.

She has now started to paint more seriously during her yearly visits to Trinidad & Tobago where her daughter and family have settled in the meantime. She is currently preparing a new collection based on her recent travel experiences in Ethiopia.

Eva’s work can be found in private collections in Trinidad, Jamaica, U.S.A., Germany, England, Australia and New Zealand.
