Mary Hahn

Mary Hahn is a native of Nevis, Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, and was born there in 1925. For a remarkable artist such as herself, it is hard for one to believe that much of her work is self taught. A painter and drawer for over forty years, Ms. Hahn prefers to work in water colour and oils and has produced many stunning images that range from the semi- objective to the naturalistic-much of which comprise of landscapes. Ms. Hahn therefore, perhaps influenced by the scenery of Trinidad, came to live there in 1947, creating a legacy of works there that would later stem from her artistic psyche.

A pupil and friend of English artist Leslie Melton, Mary. Hahn has, over the years, made great achievements in the realm of painting. In 1944, she was awarded the Bronze Star Certificate War Time Competition and the Certificate of the Royal Drawing Society of England in recognition of her work. Furthermore, she has continuously exhibited with the annual Art Shows and some of the Art Galleries in Trinidad: her work was shown in a mixed exhibition of Women's Water-Colourists and has also been represented in the National Collection of Trinidad and Tobago.

A constant painter, Mary Hahn, during the 1970s and her son Stuart Hahn, another well known artist, held an exhibition at the National Museum. It is not surprising therefore that she has enjoyed many purchases and commissions for her work, from those who recognise her level of creativity.

Ms. Hahn too, has also not only participated with respect to art, but has also contributed to its development. She, as a founding member, along with Brother Fergus Griffin its inventor, Ralph Baney and William Chen helped to install the Southern Art Society and has regularly been an exhibitor at that organization. She is also an active member of Women in Art. In conclusion, it is befitting to say that Mary Hahn is a pioneer of an era that has lasted over four decades during which time she has practiced art and has enjoyed its company.
