Valerie Belgrave
Valerie Belgrave is both a writer and a visual artist.
As a writer, she has written four novels and the play “Night of the Wolf” (staged little Carib, Trinidad 1991 & Creative Arts Centre, Jamaica, 1994). For her latest novel “Dance The Water”, she also composed and produced a CD of the music featured in the novel. Her first novel, “Ti Marie,” an historical romance which places Trinidad’s early history (18th century) against an international background, is well-known and is currently used at universities here and abroad.
A fine Arts Graduate from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada, Valerie was well known in the 80’s as a Batik Artist. She held many one-woman exhibitions, displays and fashion shows locally and abroad in North America in such places as Montreal, Toronto, Washington DC, Martha’s Vineyard, in the UK in London and Oxford, in the Caribbean in Barbados and Jamaica. Her work was also featured in such international fora as The International Review of African American Art, Class and Panache Magazines, and on the BBC’s Clothes Show.
In the l990’s, having achieved her Batik goals, Valerie returned to painting doing commissions for hotels such as the Casuarina in Barbados and staging very successful exhibitions in Barbados, Michigan USA and locally, at Horizon Art Gallery in 2001 and 2004.
Her artwork is featured on several book covers for herself and others, on greeting cards and book illustrations. Her latest effort (illustration) is the children’s book, Adventures of the Magic Steelpan, (how Grandpa Conks got his name) which was launched in January 2007.
